Billy Joel kicked off his residency at Madison Square Garden in New York on Monday night and joked about taking on the plan to perform at the hallowed venue every month throughout 2014.
The Piano Man singer will perform one show a month at MSG, including a date on his 65th birthday in May, and he told fans that it would be quite a challenge.
After racing through classics like New York State of Mind, Allentown and The Longest Time, he quipped, “I have no idea how long this is going to go. 2014 is my 50th year in showbusiness. What was I thinking?”
The 64 year old used a throat spray he had seen Madonna squirt during one of her shows to help him hit the high notes, admitting, “I saw Madonna do this once, but it didn’t help her much.”
And he poked fun at himself after catching the image of his face on the video screen behind the stage, joking, “I thought I was gonna look like Cary Grant.”
