Celebrated tenor Placido Domingo has been honored in his native Spain with a top arts award.
The Grammy-winning opera star was presented with the prestigious Order of Arts and Letters during a ceremony in Madrid on Friday, in recognition of his “extraordinary artistic career as a singer and orchestra conductor”.

In a statement, a representative for the Ministry of Culture continues, “(Domingo is) one of the great ambassadors of Spain and of its culture in the world.

“One of the great tenors in history, (he has enjoyed) a 50-year career that is unparallelled in the history of modern music.”

The accolade comes days before the singer celebrates his 70th birthday onstage at Madrid’s Teatro Real opera house.

He will be performing in Christoph Willibald Gluck’s Iphigenie en Tauride with special guests when he marks the milestone on 21 January.
