Next month’s BRIT Awards look set to be a good night for the girls with Scottish soul sensation Emeli Sande, Rita Ora and tragic Amy Winehouse leading the full list of nominations.
Sande leads the pack with four nods and will compete for British Female Solo Artist and British Album for Our Version of Events, while she has double the chance of victory in the British Single category – both Next To Me and Beneath Your Beautiful, her collaboration with rapper Labrinth, are up for the prize.
Sande’s handful of nods comes on the back of a stellar 12 months for the star, who was tipped for big success at last year’s ceremony, where she was presented with the Critics’ Choice honor. She then doubled up at the London Olympics, performing at the opening and closing ceremonies.
Commenting on her nominations, she tells the BBC, “It’s a really good feeling. It feels great, a bit scary, because you never know, you might not win anything.”
Meanwhile, there were triple nods for folk rockers Mumford & Sons, Alt-J and pop star Rita Ora, while tragic Amy Winehouse also earned a posthumous nomination – she will face Sande in the British Female Solo Artist category, alongside Paloma Faith, Bat For Lashes and Jessie Ware.
The shortlist for the 2013 BRIT Awards was announced in London on Thursday and the winners will be presented with statuettes designed by artist Damien Hirst at the city’s O2 Arena on 20 February.
