Julia Roberts’ actress niece Emma Roberts has revealed she’s scared about an upcoming court date over a cellphone misunderstanding.
The We’re The Millers star was pulled over by a traffic cop recently and accused of speaking on her mobile device as she drove through Hollywood. She protested, explaining she was actually eating a bagel behind the wheel and not breaking any laws.
But the officer refused to believe her story.
Recounting the drama during an appearance on U.S. TV show Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday, Roberts said, “I was like, ‘I’m eating a bagel, my phone is in my purse’, and he’s like, ‘I’ve heard a lot of stories, but eating on the bagel (sic), never heard that one’. I was like, ‘What are you talking about, I have cream cheese on my face! I’m eating a bagel’.
“He wrote me a ticket for talking on the phone… and then when he asked for my license, I was like, ‘Oh my God, my house flooded. I don’t have my license’, and he still didn’t believe me, and he then wrote me a ticket for both of these things. Now I have to go to court and I’m scared.
“The ticket was cryptic. It wasn’t like, ‘Pay the fine’. It was like, ‘Downtown… July 2nd… 4pm’. You can’t even log in (to the Los Angeles court website) and get it over with.”
But Roberts has one fact in her favor: “When I got the ticket, it said, ‘Talking on a black iPhone’, and my iPhone is hot pink… When he was driving away, I wanted to be like, ‘My iPhone is pink!’
“He told me that I should be lucky I got off so easy and was like, ‘What do you do to other people…?’ I was so flustered. I was in tears and it was funny because I was really telling the truth but it’s like when you tell the truth to a cop, you feel like you’re lying.”
