Actor Hugh Grant feared he would lose contact with his daughter if his ex Tinglan Hong was unable to obtain a court order banning the paparazzi from harassing her – because she was ready to jet back to her native China and take his baby with her.
The Notting Hill star became a first-time father in October following a brief fling with Chinese model/actress Hong, but he worried he’d have to fly to the Far East to see his child when his ex complained about her lack of privacy in London.
She was forced to appeal to the authorities to help protect her and her daughter after finding herself constantly hounded by photographers.
Luckily for Grant, she was granted a protective order prohibiting harassment in November and the actor, who is still “very friendly” with his one-time lover, is relieved things worked out.
He tells People.com, “Had I not been able to get that injunction, she would’ve gone home to China with my baby.”
The star admits that becoming a father to little Tabitha has made his life “nicer” and “richer” – and he wishes he had had kids sooner.
Grant adds, “I always assumed I’d end up having children, but I did, I admit, leave it rather late. When poor Tabitha wants to climb trees with me, I’ll be sitting in a wheelchair! But it’s just lovely. (My life) is nicer. It’s definitely richer, and I’m delighted to have her. I adore her.”
But becoming a parent has made Grant re-evaluate his priorities and the renowned bachelor is now planning to cut down on his nights out and only take on work when he wants to: “I have quite a busy social life, as you can see from the bags under my eyes. But I think it’s time to cut back.
“I’m 51 and a father. I’ve always had one foot in showbusiness and one foot out and I think my weight is slightly more on the out now.”
