British actress/model Kelly Brook has come under fire from anti-domestic violence campaigners after she described punching her ex-boyfriend Jason Statham.
Brook made the revelation in her new book Up Close, revealing she smacked the actor in the face after she caught him flirting with Hollywood star Gwyneth Paltrow at Madonna’s wedding to Guy Ritchie in 2000.
She wrote, “He started to swing his hips from side to side and do a little jive with his arms, saying: ‘Gywnnie, Gwynnie, Gwynnie. Sexy, sexy, sexy!’ He turned round, only to be met with my fist in his face.”
Brook also described hitting another ex-boyfriend, rugby ace Danny Cipriani, after she discovered he had given his phone number to a stripper in Las Vegas, and her comments have sparked outrage among campaigners against domestic abuse.
Mark Brooks, chairman of ManKind, a charity which supports male victims of abuse, tells Britain’s The Independent newspaper, “I am extremely disappointed that there is no public backlash against the actions of Ms Brook as if the genders were reversed then there rightly would be. It would then lead the news agenda, politicians would be speaking out and social media would be alive with comment.
“Sadly, because men are the victims there is a deathly silence which shows how far we need to go before all victims of domestic abuse are treated the same.”
Sandra Horley, of U.K. domestic violence charity Refuge, adds, “Domestic violence is always unacceptable. Regardless of age, background, gender or sexuality, there is no excuse for using violence against a partner.”
