Comedian-turned-stage star Lenny Henry triumphed over Oscar-nominated actor Chiwetel Ejiofor to win a top prize at the Critics’ Circle Theater Awards in London on Tuesday.
Henry took the coveted Best Actor prize at the ceremony in London for his role in August Wilson’s play Fences, seeing off fierce competition from 12 Years A Slave star Ejiofor, who was nominated for his turn in A Season In The Congo.
Another big winner at the ceremony was Skyfall’s Rory Kinnear, who took home two prizes – an acting nod for Best Shakespearean Performance as Iago in Othello, and the Most Promising Playwright trophy for his debut play, The Herd. He shared the writing prize with Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag).
Veteran actress Lesley Manville won Best Actress for her performance in Henrik Ibsen’s classic drama Ghosts.
