Rap superstar Lil Wayne is expected to walk free from jail in November after serving just eight months of his year-long sentence.

The Lollipop hitmaker, real name Dwayne Carter, Jr., has been serving time at New York’s tough Rikers Island prison since March, after pleading guilty to charges of gun possession.

He has been keeping fans updated on his progress behind bars via a specially-dedicated website, but he will soon get to reconnect with his devotees in person – MTV News reports Wayne’s projected release date is 4 November.

The hip-hop star will be a free man after eight months of incarceration, providing he continues to abide by jail rules and regulations.

Wayne previously found himself in trouble with prison officials when guards reportedly discovered “contraband” in his cell, including iPod earphones and a charger for an MP3 player.

But Wayne is refusing to let his legal problems silence his music – he will release a new EP when he turns 28 on 28 September.
