Folk singer Michelle Shocked has staged a bizarre sit-in outside one of the venues which cancelled her show following her alleged homophobic rant at a gig earlier this month.
The Anchorage singer left fans aghast halfway through a show at Yoshi’s in San Fransisco, California when she ranted about gay marriage, saying, “When they stop Prop 8 (the legislation outlawing same-sex marriage in California) and force priests at gunpoint to marry gays, it will be the downfall of civilisation, and Jesus will come back.”
She later apologised for her remarks, insisting her comments had been misunderstood, but the controversy ended up costing her several tour dates as venue bosses scrapped her gigs.
However, she turned up at one of the venues – Moe’s Alley in San Francisco – on Thursday night with tape over her mouth and wearing a white disposable suit, which she encouraged supporters to sign with a pen.
The club’s owner Bill Welch spoke with the songwriter outside, before telling reporters, “We will not be bashing Michelle Shocked. Rather we will celebrate music, diversity and send some healing Santa Cruz energy her way.”
