Oscar Pistorius has marked the first anniversary of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp’s death by releasing a statement detailing his “trauma” and “grief” exactly a year after he shot her dead at his home in South Africa.
The South African Paralympian, known as Blade Runner, has been charged with murderfor gunning down the model while she was locked in the bathroom at his property in Pretoria on Valentine’s Day last year.
Pistorius, who denies the charge and claims he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder, has now marked the first anniversary of her death by releasing a statement in which he talks about his love for his late girlfriend.
The statement, posted on his official website, reads, “No words can adequately capture my feelings about the devastating accident that has caused such heartache for everyone who truly loved – and continues to love Reeva. The pain and sadness – especially for Reeva’s parents, family and friends consumes me with sorrow. The loss of Reeva and the complete trauma of that day, I will carry with me for the rest of my life.”
Pistorius, 27, remains free on bail ahead of his trial, which is due to start on 3 March.
