The boyfriend of tragic singer Amy Winehouse was hoping to start a new romance with a woman who has accused him of rape, a court in the U.K. has heard.
Reg Traviss, who was dating the Back to Black hitmaker when she died from alcohol poisoning in July last year, insists he became a hermit for months after she passed away.
By December, he felt ready to socialise again and grew close to a 27-year-old woman, but his world fell apart once more when she accused him of raping her at his London home.
Traviss was charged with two counts of rape, but giving evidence at London’s Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday, he told the jury the woman is lying and he is baffled by her allegation as he thought their relationship had a future.
He said, “There is no truth in this allegation whatsoever… I sort of came away from that evening thinking this could be really good, this could be the start of something. I wasn’t looking for a girlfriend but she is somebody I have known for a long time and (I thought) that there could be something in this.”
The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, alleges she stayed overnight at Traviss’ apartment after an evening spent drinking together but she twice woke up to find him having sex with her.
Traviss denies two counts of rape. The trial continues.
