Robert De Niro and his production partners at Tribeca Film have picked up the distribution rights to rapper Nas’ new Illmatic documentary.
The movie star and his associates have acquired North American rights to Time Is Illmatic, which premiered at the opening night of the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival last month.
The documentary, directed by multimedia artist One9, chronicles the making of Nas’ 1994 debut album, Illmatic, which is widely considered one of the most important and revolutionary albums in hip-hop.
The Tribeca Film partners are planning a simultaneous theatrical and video-on-demand release in October.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Nas says, “I want to thank Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal & the Tribeca Film family for all of the love & support they’ve given Time Is Illmatic. It is an honor to be in partnership with them. I feel there is a cultural kinship bonded by the city of New York.”
