Tony Bennett has revealed his latest duet partner Amy Winehouse knew she was near death when they recorded the classic standard Body & Soul in London earlier this year.
The legendary crooner was thrilled to get the chance to perform with the tragic Brit at London’s Abbey Road studios for his hit new album Duets II, but he admits the collaboration had ominous undertones.

Bennett reveals he didn’t know it at the time, but recalling conversations he had with Winehouse and reviewing film footage of their time together, he realizes his young friend was in trouble.

Appearing on Thursday’s The Daily Show in America, he explained, “She knew that she was in a lot of trouble, that she wasn’t gonna live. It wasn’t drugs, it was alcohol ’til the end.”

And Bennett is disappointed he’ll never get the chance to perform with her again: “She was the only singer that really sang what I call the right way.”

Winehouse died in July. Her duet with Bennett was released on what would have been her 28th birthday.
