Bette Midler has scored the birthday apology she asked newsman Geraldo Rivera for after accusing him of sexually assaulting her in the 1970s.
Bette revisited the encounter in a tweet on Thursday, sharing a clip from a 1991 Barbara Walters interview, during which Midler alleged Rivera plied her with drugs and groped her in a bathroom.
“Geraldo and his producer came to do an interview with me in the early ’70s,” she recalled. “This was when he was very – sort of hot – and he and his producer left the crew in the other room, they pushed me into my bathroom, they broke two poppers and pushed them under my nose and proceeded to grope me.”
The singer and actress then called on the newsman to offer up his regrets for allegedly assaulting her as a 72nd birthday gift to the Beaches star.
“Tomorrow is my birthday,” she wrote in the tweet. “I feel like this (Barbara Walters interview) video was a gift from the universe to me… He has yet to apologize for this.”
Geraldo has now responded, explaining he remembers his encounter with Midler “differently”, but he has apologized for embarrassing her.
“Although I recall the time @BetteMidler has alluded to much differently than she, that does not change the fact that she has a right to speak out & demand an apology from me, for in the very least, publically (sic) embarrassing her all those years ago,” he writes. “Bette, I apologize.”
