U2 frontman Bono has undergone emergency back surgery at a hospital in Munich, Germany.
The rocker, 50, was taken to a medical facility on Friday after sustaining an injury during preparation for the band’s 360 Degree world tour.
A spokesperson for the group says, “Bono has today undergone emergency back surgery for an injury sustained during tour preparation training. He was admitted to a specialist neurosurgery unit in a Munich hospital.
“Bono will spend the next few days there, before returning home to recuperate.”
The singer’s operation has forced U2 to cancel the first show of their North American tour in Salt Lake City, Utah on 3 June, and the band’s manager, Paul McGuinness, warns fans there could be further cancellations as a result of Bono’s back problems.
He says, “It’s unfortunate that we’re inconveniencing fans. We will make plans to reinstate these dates as soon as possible.
“Obviously, it’s been very disruptive to our crew. We have over 400 people converging on Salt Lake City. Some of those have been told to turn around and told to stay at home until we make our new plan.”
