Carrie Underwood and Reba Mcentire joined Dolly Parton for a rendition of the track she recorded with Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt, Those Memories of You, to open the CMA Awards in Nashville, Tennessee on Wednesday night (13Nov19).
The ceremony co-hosts then introduced Jennifer Nettles and Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman, who performed Loretta Lynn’s You’re Lookin’ at Country.
The two performances kicked off a powerful opening to the show at the Bridgestone Arena at a time when country’s female stars are challenging music executives and festival and radio station bosses to take women more seriously – and book and play them more often.
According to Billboard, the opening also featured The Highwomen, while Parton returned to the stage to perform Tammy Wynette’s Your Good Girl’s Gonna Go Bad and joined Tanya Tucker for Delta Dawn.
Underwood, Parton, Nettles, Fairchild and Schlapman then teamed up with Gretchen Wilson on her Redneck Woman hit. Crystal Gayle, Terri Clark, and Sara Evans were also part of the empowerment moment.
