Hollywood star George Clooney has been named as a witness for the defense in the upcoming prostitution trial of Italian leader Silvio Berlusconi.
The Prime Minister is accused of paying teenage Moroccan hooker Karima el-Mahroug, aka Ruby, for sex – and then using his position to try and cover up the scandal. He has denied the charge.

Clooney was drawn into the criminal case after Ruby reported seeing the actor and his girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis at one of the Berlusconi’s parties last year.

According to a local newspaper report, Italian model/TV presenter Canalis recently spoke to prosecutors and denied attending any of the premier’s events, but attorney Piersilvio Cipollotti insists he wants to hear the testimony for himself.

He says, “We want to see if they confirm this fact or not.”

Clooney, who owns a holiday retreat in Lake Como, was among a host of potential witnesses listed by Berlusconi’s lawyers on Tuesday. Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini and a string of showgirls are also included on the 136-strong list of witnesses.

Berlusconi’s trial begins in Milan next week.
