David Beckham has reached out to fans who were left injured during a scramble to catch a glimpse of the retired soccer superstar at an appearance in China on Thursday (20Jun13).
Beckham, who is in China as part of his role as the country’s first ever soccer ambassador, was on his way to meet players at Tongji University in Shanghai when he was caught up in a swarm of devotees.
The stampede of people resulted in a crush, which left three cops, two university security guards and two students injured. Beckham was forced to call off the appearance after witnessing the mob scene.
After the frenzy, Beckham took to his Facebook page to write, “I had an incredible response from everyone at Shanghai Tongji University today, sorry I couldn’t get out on the pitch to see the teams but it was impossible to get through the massive crowds. I heard there were a few injuries, I hope the fans are ok and I wish them a speedy recovery.”
