A major new art prize has been created to honour Robert De Niro’s dad.
The Robert De Niro, Sr Prize will honour an outstanding “mid-career American artist” with an annual award of £16,600 for achievements in painting.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by De Niro’s famous son at a reception held at the late artist’s studio in New York City.

The Robert De Niro, Sr Prize will be administered by the Tribeca Film Institute and funded by Robert De Niro. The first prize will be awarded in 2011.

The movie star says, “I am proud to honour my father as an artist and pay tribute to his painting through the Robert De Niro, Sr Prize. By annually awarding an American artist who is recognised for exceptional quality in painting, we hope to support artists, like my father, who are making a lifelong commitment to their art.”
