A collection of dresses once worn by Diana, Princess Of Wales has sold at auction for more than $1.2 million.
The midnight blue Victor Edelstein gown the late royal wore when she famously danced with John Travolta at a 1985 state dinner at the White House was the top draw at the Kerry Taylor Auctions event, selling for $362,470, while two Catherine Walker dresses, including a beaded black design Diana donned for a Vanity Fair photoshoot with photographer Mario Testino, raised $163,091 each.
The outfits were among 10 Diana costumes to go under the hammer in London on Tuesday at the Fit for a Princess: Important dresses formerly in the collection of Diana, Princess of Wales sale. Many of the pieces were obtained by museum officials from around the world.
Auction boss Kerry Taylor tells Reuters, “We attracted bidders from across the world including Asia, America, Austria, Australia and, of course, the U.K., including three important museums, so we are hopeful that now people will actually get to see some of the dresses that belonged to the People’s Princess.”
The gowns had initially been sold at a charity auction in New York in June, 1997, two months before her death in Paris, France.
