The Sopranos star Edie Falco has spoken of her shock and devastation following the sudden death of her former onscreen husband James Gandolfini.
The 51-year-old actor, who played mob boss Tony Soprano in the hit crime drama, passed away on Wednesday after suffering a fatal heart attack in Rome, Italy while on vacation with his 13-year-old son, Michael.
Gandolfini’s sudden death sent shockwaves through the Hollywood community, prompting an outpouring of grief from his friends and former colleagues, and now Falco, who played Tony Soprano’s wife Carmela, has expressed her sadness in the aftermath of the tragic news.
She says in a statement, “I am shocked and devastated by Jim’s passing. He was a man of tremendous depth and sensitivity, with a kindness and generosity beyond words. I consider myself very lucky to have spent 10 years as his close colleague. My heart goes out to his family… As those of us in his pretend one (family) hold on to the memories of our intense and beautiful time together. The love between Tony and Carmela was one of the greatest I’ve ever known.”
The pair worked together for a decade across six seasons of the hit TV show, which won them both a slew of prestigious awards over the years.
Hospital chiefs in Rome have confirmed the actor died after going into cardiac arrest, but his cause of death will not be made official until after a planned autopsy. Reports suggest Gandolfini’s young son found the star collapsed in the bathroom of his room at the Boscolo Hotel Exedra and alerted staff.
Gandolfini was traveling with his wife, Deborah Lin and their baby daughter Liliana, as well as his son Michael, at the time. The star’s sister was also among the group.
