A representative for Mel Gibson has moved swiftly to reassure fans the actor is “fine” after crashing his car into a Malibu, California hillside on Sunday.

The actor/director, who is at the center of a bitter custody battle with his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, had to call a tow truck to Malibu Canyon Road to recover his battered Maserati after he lost control of his car.

Police officers have confirmed Gibson was not hurt and a friend picked him up at the scene. Gibson’s rep has assured fans the star is “fine”.

Meanwhile, authorities have ruled the crash an accident, though its cause remains a mystery.

California Highway Patrol spokesman Leland Tang tells “There were no objective symptoms of intoxication, any level of impairment and we’ve ruled out speeding as well based on the damage to the car, which was moderate. Mr. Gibson was alert, oriented and co-operative.

“I don’t know how the car left the roadway. This has been ruled an accident. It could’ve happened to anyone.”
