Green Day have banned hangers-on from gaining access to their inner sanctum in a desperate bid to keep frontman Billie Joe Armstrong sober.
The American Idiot hitmakers forced Armstrong to enter a rehab clinic last year for alcoholism and a prescription pills habit following a meltdown at a gig in Las Vegas in September.
The band returned to the stage on Sunday for a concert at the Fox Theater in Pomona, California, and bassist Mike Dirnt has revealed the rockers have installed some drastic backstage security measures to prevent the singer falling off the wagon.
Dirnt tells NME magazine, “He’s in a good place. What I will say is backstage is going to be a lot different from now on. We’ll watch for stuff getting passed around, not let idiots walk backstage, not get hammered and s**t like that.
“When you’re in a band, everyone in the world wants to have a shot with you. But if you have a shot with everyone in the world you’d be dead.”
