The grieving relatives of late rapper Heavy D have remembered the star as a “giving spirit” and a devoted dad after his death last week.
The hip-hop icon, real name Dwight Arrington Myers, was found unconscious outside his home in Beverly Hills, California last Tuesday after returning from a shopping trip. He was taken to hospital and pronounced dead an hour later.

His cause of death has been deferred pending the results of ongoing toxicology tests, and is unlikely to be confirmed ahead of his funeral at New York’s Grace Baptist Church on Friday.

On Monday, Heavy D’s family took time out of their mourning to tells fans of their love for the star a week after his passing.

In a statement, the family says, “Hev had great love for his family and friends. He was a kind and giving spirit who extended and shared himself with everyone who crossed his path.

“Hev’s love for his daughter Xea was profound – she was the centre of his life, his heart, his soul. She embodied every phenomenal attribute that he brought to this world.

“He never compromised his values and artistry, and encouraged his peers to do the same. To us, Hev was the one who made us laugh, cry, sing, dance and turn a frown upside down. As a family, we are devastated by Hev’s passing, but through our faith in God and support from family, friends and fans – we are comforted, blessed and will remain strong. His ‘bear hugs’ are going to be deeply missed.”
