Welsh actor Rhys Ifans has been arrested on suspicion of battery after an alleged altercation with a security guard at Comic-Con in California.
Ifans appeared at the annual pop culture event in San Diego on Friday – his 44th birthday – to promote his upcoming action movie The Amazing Spider-Man, in which he stars as the villain Lizard.

But he landed in trouble for reportedly pushing a female guard after a member of his entourage was found to be without proper identification. Ifans was said to have cursed at staff, prompting the guard to make a citizen’s arrest.

San Diego police spokeswoman Lt. Andra Brown tells Reuters, “He was abusive, belligerent and aggressive, and shoved a female security guard.” Brown added that the Notting Hill star’s breath “smelled like alcohol”.

Ifans was issued with a citation for misdemeanour battery and released. The San Diego City Attorney will now decide whether to pursue further action.

Bosses at Sony Pictures, who are behind the Spider-Man movies, have issued a statement to TheWrap.com insisting Ifans “deeply regrets the incident”.
