Moviemaker Peter Jackson received a standing ovation at Comic-Con in San Diego, California on Friday during a packed preview for Steven Spielberg’s new movie Tin Tin.
More than 6,000 people packed into the annual convention’s fabled Hall H to listen to Spielberg talk about his latest film and future ventures – but no one expected Jackson to make an appearance after the Lord of the Rings director told fans he would not be part of the 2011 Comic-Con in posts on his blog.

Spielberg introduced what appeared to be a clip of Jackson auditioning for the part of Captain Haddock in Tin Tin. As film fans chuckled, the moviemaker strolled out onstage.

And there was another surprise in store for fans when the panel discussion’s question-and-answer session began – Lord of the Rings star Andy Serkis, in disguise, posed the first question to Spielberg and Jackson before movie mogul Spielberg revealed the questioner’s true identity.

Comic-Con continues over the weekend.
