Jls star Oritse Williams “couldn’t perform” on the night he allegedly raped a fan after a 2016 gig because he’d consumed too much alcohol, a court heard on Monday.
The 32-year-old is standing trial alongside tour manager Jamien Nagadhana for allegedly raping a fan he met following a solo performanceat the Gorgeous nightclub in Wolverhampton in December 2016.
The woman – who cannot be named for legal reasons – alleged she and two friends were invited to attend the star’s private party following the intimate nightclub set, and subsequently accompanied the former The X Factor star to the nearby Ramada Park Hotel, where he raped her.
It is alleged that the victim and her friends were given free alcohol by the star’s entourage, which they later claimed had been tampered with.
The jury at Wolverhampton Crown Court heard Williams’ police interview for the first time on Monday, in which he said: “The girl said she wanted to spend the night with me. I said no problem (and) we started making out.
“I pulled out a condom for safe sex as I’m ambassador for safe sex, (but) because of the alcohol I couldn’t perform too well – which is embarrassing to say,” he added. “We lay down and fell asleep, and I can remember waking up to a knock at the door. It was the girl and she was with a male member of staff, (and) she said she wanted to look for her phone. She left, and then I woke again in the morning to a knock at the door and it was the police.”
In the recording, Williams also claimed he feels he was “taken advantage of” because of his boyband fame.
“I am feeling bewildered at this whole thing. I do feel taken advantage of,” the star shared. “I just feel like a musician, an artist that has been put into a position where they have been taken advantage of.”
Last week, prosecutor Miranda Moore told the court that the woman was pinned down by the popstar, after she had already left the room once but returned to retrieve her mobile phone.
“Once she was back in the room – she had to knock on the door – Mr Williams effectively jumped on her,” Ms. Moore told jurors. “He picked her up and pushed her down on the double bed. She had already made it clear that she didn’t want to have sex with him.
“All she thought was ‘I don’t want this to happen’,” the prosecution stated.
The case is ongoing.
