Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon has wrecked fans’ hopes for any new material from the punk supergroup.
Lydon, aka Johnny Rotten, has occasionally reunited the original Pistols for one-off shows and tours, and at one point there was talk of the quartet recording new material – but the God Save The Queen singer now fears the opportunity has passed and he’s more interested in using his creative energy to write new songs for his other reunited act, Public Image Ltd.
He tells, “I couldn’t write new songs in a Sex Pistols context. I love singing them old songs, because they’re very poignant and a very pertinent part of history belongs to the Sex Pistols. If I write new songs, it’s PiL and that’s it.”
But he insists he could reunite the Pistols again for a tour, even though the last time he hit the road with Steve Jones, Glen Matlock and Paul Cook, it became a bit of a chore.
He adds, “Occasionally, a reenactment is a fine thing. I love Civil War reenactments.
“Unfortunately, the (last) tour went on too long, and it crept back in to all the old problems. It became very staid and tired for me and it felt like it was a job.”
