Hip-hop star Macklemore struggled to enjoy his quadruple win at the Grammy Awards on Sunday, because he felt terrible for “robbing” pal Kendrick Lamar of the Best Rap Album honor.
The Thrift Shop hitmaker and his collaborator Ryan Lewis claimed the title for their debut release The Heist, but Macklemore admits he was genuinely shocked to learn they had beaten Lamar to the prize – and he sent the Swimming Pools (Drank) star a text to express his guilt.
Macklemore, who shared a screen grab of the cell phone message with his followers after Sunday’s ceremony, wrote: “You got robbed. I wanted you to win. You should have. It’s weird and it sucks that I robbed you.
“I was gonna say that during the speech. Then the music started playing during my speech and I froze. Anyway you know what it is. Congrats on this year and your music.”
The award was actually handed out during a pre-Grammys telecast prizegiving, which Macklemore & Ryan Lewis did not attend because they were preparing for their performance with Madonna and Mary Lambert at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The only award the duo picked up at the official event was one for Best New Artist.
In the accompanying photo caption to Macklemore’s Instagram post, he further explained, “He (Lamar) deserved best rap album. I’m honored and completely blown away to win anything much less 4 Grammys. But in that category, he should have won IMO (in my opinion).”
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, who headed into Sunday with seven nominations, also claimed Grammys for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for Thrift Shop.
They also made history at the Grammy Awards by performing their gay rights anthem Same Love with Mary Lambert and Madonna, as Queen Latifah officiated a group wedding ceremony for 33 gay, straight and interracial couples in the aisles of the Staples Center.
Lamar was another seven-time nominee, but walked away from the prizegiving empty-handed.
