A New York woman convicted of stalking French actress Marion Cotillard online has been sentenced to probation.
Teresa Yuan, who suffers from bipolar disorder, faced up to 16 months behind bars after pleading guilty last September to bombarding the Inception star’s fan website with more than 500 emails, including 120 bizarre video clips of herself, over a four-day period in 2011.
She appeared in Brooklyn Federal Court on Tuesday for punishment, but Federal Judge William Kuntz decided to spare her jail so she can continue to receive treatment for her medical condition.
Judge Kuntz also ordered Yuan, 32, to remain on her medication and demanded that she use just one device to connect to the Internet – so her usage can be easily monitored by authorities, reports the New York Daily News.
Expressing her regret over the incidents, Yuan said: “It was never my intention to threaten or scare anybody. I am bitterly ashamed of myself.”
