Steve Martin surprised Saturday Night Live guest host Alec Baldwin during the show’s season premiere by congratulating the 30 Rock star for beating his previously held hosting record.
Funnyman Baldwin made history on Saturday when he fronted the comedy sketch program for the 16th time, passing Martin’s 15 appearances – but the Father of the Bride star was gracious in defeat.

He delighted TV viewers by making a guest cameo, interrupting Baldwin onstage to joke, “I was just passing by the studio in full make-up and I heard you were breaking my hosting record, and while I’m happy for you, I wanted to make sure that you were doing it without the use of steroids or performance-enhancing drugs.”

Martin promptly asked the star for a urine sample, which Baldwin appeared to provide – and then he drank the liquid to confirm the feat was accomplished “fair and square”.

He later congratulated Baldwin on the honor and joined him to introduce the night’s talent, Radiohead.
