Michael Douglas has reiterated he has no idea what specifically caused his throat cancer after hinting to Britain’s The Guardian newspaper that oral sex was to blame.
The movie star hit the headlines over the weekend when he was quoted as saying, “I did worry if the stress caused by my son’s incarceration didn’t help trigger it. But yeah, it’s a sexually transmitted disease that causes cancer. And if you have it, cunnilingus is also the best cure for it.”
The Wall Street star’s representative has since spoken out to play down the sensational story, insisting his client’s comments have been misconstrued – and he doesn’t know how he contracted cancer.
And now Douglas is addressing the drama, insisting he’ll stand by what he said if it kickstarts a debate.
A statement from the actor reads: “I never expected to become a poster boy for head and neck cancer but, if after what started out as trying to answer a couple of questions about the suspected sources of this disease results in opening up discussion and furthering public awareness, then I’ll stand by that.
“Head and neck cancer can be caused by many things including HPV virus, smoking, alcohol, drug abuse, genes, environment and stress. I do not know what caused my cancer. If I did I’d have a Nobel Prize.”
