British actor Michael Le Vell has told a court he is “devastated” by child sex abuse claims against him and insists he is struggling to understand why he has been accused.
A woman has alleged Le Vell – a household name in the U.K. after taking a leading role in hit soap opera Coronation Street for 30 years – raped and sexually abused her for nine years from the age of six.
He stepped into the witness box at Manchester Crown Court in England on Thursday to deny the charges, and he told the jury he is baffled by the whole case.
Le Vell said, “I promise you, never in a million years would I do anything like this, ever. I am devastated. I’m lost. I don’t understand where it comes from. I’m still trying to get to the bottom of why this is happening to me.”
Le Vell denies 12 sex abuse charges, including five counts of rape and three indecent assaults.
The case continues.
