Country star Willie Nelson has escaped a possible jail term following his arrest for marijuana possession in Texas last week – he will only face a fine after police determined the drug stash was not big enough for a felony charge.
The singer was travelling on his tour bus when the vehicle was pulled over by Border Patrol officers at a Sierra Blanca checkpoint.

A cop embarked on a search of the bus after reportedly smelling pot and Nelson and two associates were taken into custody after a quantity of the drug, initially thought to be around six ounces (170 grams), was found onboard.

The 77 year old admitted the marijuana belonged to him and he was booked for drug possession in Hudspeth County Jail.

However, cops have only charged Nelson with a misdemeanour because the stash weighed in at less than four ounces (113 grams), reports

Nelson is free on $2,500 bail and will be fined if he is found to be guilty of the charge.
