Paul McCartney is heading High In The Clouds to adapt his 2005 children’s book as a new animated film for Netflix.
Head Over Heels director Timothy Reckart will shoot the movie from a screenplay by Paddington writer Jon Croker, while the rock legend will serve as a producer on the project, for which he will also pen original songs and music.
Netflix officials will develop the film with bosses at production firm Gaumont Animation and Family, who originally optioned the rights to the picture book in 2017.
In a statement announcing the news, McCartney writes, “We are thrilled to be partnering with Netflix. They complement what is already an amazing team with (producers at) Gaumont and we can think of no one better to be working with to bring our film to a global audience.
“I’ve always loved animated films and this is a hugely important passion project for me. I can’t wait for the world to see it.”
High in the Clouds, co-created by author Philip Ardagh and illustrator Geoff Dunbar, follows the adventures of Wirral the squirrel as he becomes caught up with a gang of teen rebels who live high in the clouds, and accidentally angers tyrannical leader Gretsch the owl, who has the ability to steal the voice of anyone who upstages her.
