Rapper Pitbull is building a free charter school for kids in his hometown of Miami, Florida to put them on the path to a brighter future.
The Don’t Stop the Party hitmaker was born in an impoverished part of the city, and as a way of giving back to the locals, he’s founded a public high school, called the Sports Leadership Academy of Miami (SLAM), for students pursuing a career in the field of athletics.
The institute is slated to open later this year, but on Friday Pitbull visited the construction site with a camera crew from breakfast show Today to check out the progress.
The proud star said, “What we wanted to do is give back to the community, but at the same time let them know that I’m from the same spot and I’m going through the same troubles. In no way, shape or form me being born and raised and growing up in Miami would (I) ever imagine me standing on (the foundation of) a school, that we’re a part of. So to be up here for me is very emotional.”
