Russell Crowe has heaped praise on pal Hugh Jackman’s new role in their blockbuster movie musical Les Miserables, insisting the Australian star is “wonderful” as Jean Valjean.
The two friends play enemies in the film but bonded on-set and at weekly sing-alongs Crowe hosted at his rented home during the project – and it appears the Gladiator star has developed something of a man-crush on the actor he suggested should play Wolverine in Bryan Singer’s first X-Men movie when he turned the project down.
Crowe took to on Thursday after watching Les Miserables again at the London premiere on Wednesday night and admitted he was overcome with emotion.
He wrote, “(I) cried in the same places again,” and then added, “@realhughjackman you are wonderful in this role.”
Crowe joined select media members and castmates in New York when director Tom Hooper first screened the film on 23 November, just a day after he completed work on the much-anticipated epic.
And it appears his latest viewing in London was a career highlight.
He tweeted, “Oh London, sometimes I just love you unreasonably. Fantastic night last night, all class. Thank you very much.”
Jackman has wonderful things to say about his new movie nemesis too – he recently thanked Crowe for handing him the X-Men role, and said, “Russell has given me advice several times at key moments in my life that helped with my career. I also owe him because two of the biggest roles I’ve ever had in my life, he turned down – and suggested me for them.
“On X-Men, he was Bryan Singer’s first choice for Wolverine, and he mentioned me also for Australia. He really is incredibly smart, and generous. It was a joy to work with him.”
