Former Italian leader Silvio Berlusconi has been sentenced to serve seven years behind bars after he was convicted of having sex with an underage prostitute.
The former Prime Minister was accused of paying teenage Moroccan hooker Karima el-Mahroug for sex in 2010 and then using his position to try and cover up the scandal.
He denied the charges during a lengthy trial in Milan, during which George Clooney and his ex-girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis were listed as witnesses for the defense after attending a party at the 76 year old’s villa, and on Monday he was handed the lengthy sentence, as well as a lifetime ban from public office.
Berlusconi plans to file an appeal.
It is the latest legal blow for the politician – he was ordered to serve four years behind bars in October for tax fraud and was recently sentenced to 12 months in prison on wiretapping charges.
