Sterling K. Brown has made history again, after taking home the Best Actor in a Drama Series gong at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards on Sunday night.
The 41-year-old This Is Us star beat David Harbor, Jason Bateman, Peter Dinklage and Bob Odenkirk to take home the statuette – marking the firsttime a black actor has ever won the award.
It’s the latest in a string of history-making wins for Sterling, who previously won a Golden Globe and an Emmy award for his role as Randall Pearson in the hit TV drama.
Taking to the stage to accept the prize, a clearly overwhelmed Sterling told the audience: “What a blessing it is to do what you love for a living. What an honor it is to be recognized by your peers for a job well done.
“People call us weird and strange, the truth of the matter is, everybody’s weird and strange, and we just embrace ourselves for who we are.”
Sterling, who had cameo roles in shows such as The Good Wife and Nikita before landing his career-making role in The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, also used his speech to urge any struggling actors to keep striving to achieve their dreams.
“To all those people out there still hustling, trying to make it. The fame won’t sustain you, the money won’t sustain you, the love, keep that love alive. It will keep you going,” he smiled.
He also gave a shout out to actress wife Ryan Michelle Bathe, gushing: “I love actors so much, I decided to marry one,” he joked. “Ryan Michelle Bathe, you’re the best scene partner a brother’s ever had.”
As well as Sterling’s win, the This Is Us cast took home the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series award, with Milo Ventimiglia taking charge of accepting the prize.
After thanking everyone involved in the making of the show, Milo concluded: “There’s one more thing. To the people that watch with us every Tuesday night and embrace this show that reflects positivity and hope and inclusion: We love you and thank you very much.”
