Thor: Ragnarok star Tessa Thompson is to play notorious jewel thief Doris Payne in a new biopic.
The actress will tackle a role Halle Berry was previously attached to.
Payne, who is now 87, has been arrested many times for jewelry heists over the past six decades.
“After chasing Doris and her story for years – and then keeping this secret for awhile – I’m screaming that this dream is coming true,” Thompson tweeted on Tuesday.
Payne was booked on larceny charges in Georgia last year after attempting to steal a diamond necklace from a Von Maur department store in the Perimeter Mall in Dunwoody.
Her crooked life was documented in the 2013 documentary The Life and Crimes of Doris Payne.
She first became notorious in the 1970s and her thefts were so widespread, officials at the Jewelers’ Security Alliance sent out alerts about her.
Prior to her latest arrest, she pleaded guilty to burglary and grand theft after stealing a diamond-and-white-gold ring from a jeweller in Palm Desert, California. She was sentenced to four years in custody and ordered her to stay away from all jewelry stores.
According to the Los Angeles Times, she was also convicted in 2011 for stealing rings in San Diego and Santa Monica, California. She was released from prison roughly three months before the Palm Desert theft.
