Tina Turner had her wedding dress picked out before she had decided to marry her partner of 27 years after spotting the Giorgio Armani creation during a fashion show in China last year.
The veteran rocker became engaged to music producer Erwin Bach earlier this year and they exchanged vows in Switzerland in July.
Turner shunned a traditional white gown and veil for the nuptials, insisting the look is “for young people”, and instead chose a green and black silk and tulle dress she had had her eye on since attending Armani’s Prive show in Beijing in May, 2012.
She tells InStyle magazine, “To marry at 73, the dress has to be spectacular… It took my breath away. I said, ‘Oh my goodness, I must have that dress.’ (When I became engaged), I immediately thought of the Beijing dress.”
However, Turner admits Bach wasn’t a fan of the outfit until he caught sight of his bride-to-be at the final fitting, where she complemented the gown with a raised hemline in front and sparkling black leggings underneath.
She says, “Erwin didn’t see the magic of the dress at first. But at the final fitting he was in a state of shock. He said it was a piece of art… I was so emotional. And in that moment I truly felt like a bride.”
