The Twilight Saga: Eclipse overshadowed competition at the box office over the Independence Day weekend, but failed to shatter records with a disappointing three-day haul of $69 million .

The third chapter in the vampire franchise debuted last Wednesday and looked poised to topple the five-day total set by last year’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

But its popularity faltered even as families took advantage of the three-day holiday weekend, and Eclipse’s five-day total of $161 million fell short of the $200 million mark set by Transformers – the record holder for highest-earning movie opening on a Wednesday.

Meanwhile, M. Night Shyamalan’s fantasy The Last Airbender was at two, pulling in almost $40.7 million in earnings on its debut weekend.

Toy Story 3 dropped from one to three, taking in almost $30.2 million in its third week.

Rounding out the top five are Adam Sandler’s comedy Grown Ups and Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz’s action comedy Knight and Day, which raked up $18.5 million and $10.2 million respectively.
