Black Eyed Peas star will.i.am is to be honored for his contributions to music and his humanitarian work by performance rights organization BMI.

The hip-hop star will receive BMI’s President’s Award at the organisation’s upcoming Urban Awards, which will take place at Hollywood’s Pantages Theater on 10 September.

The Urban Awards ceremony will honor writers and publishers of the most-performed urban songs of the previous year.

Will.i.am’s prize, presented only on unique occasions, acknowledges his work as an artist, producer and humanitarian, reports trade paper Daily Variety.

The Grammy-winner’s charitable Peapod Foundation benefits children’s issues as housing, hunger, health care, education, poverty and music and arts education.

Previous honorees include Jaunes, Taylor Swift, Willie Nelson and Brian Wilson.
