Acclaimed director Wong Kar-Wai was saluted with France’s highest cultural honor on Sunday in celebration of his lengthy career.
The In The Mood For Love moviemaker was named a Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters (Ordre des Arts et des Lettres) and presented with the medal by French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius at the consul-general’s official residence in Hong Kong.
The filmmaker said the award is “in a way, a tribute to Hong Kong cinema,” and that France is cinema’s “spirit home.”
His induction into the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres means he follows in the footsteps of screen stars including Clint Eastwood, Sean Connery and Michael Caine, and singer David Bowie.
