Chinese authorities have launched an investigation into reports acclaimed director Zhang Yimou has allegedly violated the country’s strict ‘one-child’ policy by fathering seven kids.
Reports have surfaced suggesting The Flowers of War moviemaker Yimou has gone against his native country’s restrictive family planning rules and could face a huge fine of $26 million if found guilty.
An unnamed official at the Wuxi Municipal Population and Family Planning Commission said “based on the current policies and regulations, an investigation is currently being carried out”, according to the People’s Daily, the Chinese Communist Party’s official newspaper.
The Chinese government introduced the one-child policy in 1979 to prevent population growth spiralling out of control. The legislation has long been opposed by human rights and religious groups.
